Visakhapatnam: The latest data released by Visakhapatnam police commissionerate points out that instances of drunk driving increased by 58 per cent in 2024 compared to the previous year. Police data shows that 33,707 drunk driving cases were prosecuted between Jan 1 and Dec 22 in 2014, an increase from 21,376 cases in 2023 and 9,667 in 2022.

On an average, 70 to 90 drunk driving cases were reported per day in the city. When it comes to profiling of tipsy driving offenders, around 40 per cent of them were in the age group of 20 to 35 year and this is a worrying factor, said a senior traffic police officer in Vizag city.
Vizag city police chief Shanka Brata Bagchi said they have intensified drives against the tipsy driving in Vizag city to mitigate possible road crashes in the city. Tipsy drivers have paid a fine of Rs 11.05 crore in 2024 and some tipsy motorists were sentenced to two to three days in jail, while some others were asked create traffic awareness, he added.
