Vijayawada: Guntur district saw a significant decline in overall crime rate in 2024 compared to the previous year, said SP Satish Kumar on Sunday. The total number of registered cases dropped from 8,195 in 2023 to 6,515 in 2024, marking a 20 percent decline.
According to the SP, property offences came down by 19 percent, with 1,039 cases reported in 2024 compared to 1,290 in 2023.Property recovery also dropped from 58.07 percent to 38.16 percent, and bodily offences, including serious crimes like murder and assault, fell by 18 percent, thanks to measures like regular counselling for rowdy sheeters.
Crimes against women saw a 24 percent decrease, with 1,035 cases reported this year.
Meanwhile, NTR district police commissionerate reported significant progress in 2024, said police commissioner S V Rajashekara Babu at the annual press meet.
While a total of 6,477 cases were reported in 2023, this number dropped to 5,780 in 2024, a reduction of 10.76 percent. However, certain categories saw an increase in crime rate, including crimes against SC/ST communities (+15.94 percent), cyber crimes (+73.14 percent), and crimes against property (+3.2 percent).
A closer look at the crime statistics reveals a mixed picture. Crimes against women and children decreased by 26.05 percent, while cybercrimes increased significantly by 73.14 percent, with 303 cases reported. Road accidents saw a rise in fatal incidents by 10.67 percent, but non-fatal incidents decreased by 16.36 percent. Within specific crime categories, bodily crimes saw an overall decline of 8.06 percent, but attempts to murder surged by 124.39 percent. Dowry deaths increased by 66.67 percent, while dowry harassment cases dropped by 29.91 percent. Cases of rape and attempted rape also saw a reduction of 33.89 percent. Crimes against SC/ST communities increased by 14.49 percent, primarily in ‘other crimes’ and arson cases.
