Poor quality cakes flood streets on New Year’s eve | Vijayawada News

Vijayawada: Lack of strict supervision by the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) officials led to a surge in the sale of unlicensed and poor-quality cakes across the city on New Year’s eve. Several unregistered vendors capitalised on high demand for cakes. They set up makeshift stalls along the city streets and offered low-cost cakes with enticing freebies like biryani and cool drinks.
This year, at least 350 unlicensed stalls in Vijayawada alone were reportedly selling poor-quality cakes, thus deceiving buyers.
K Raju, a resident of Chitti Nagar, said, “At Samarangam Chowk, I bought a cake for 400 and got one litre cool drink bottle for free. However, the cake smelled bad when I opened the package at home. Later, when I approached the vendor, he refused to take responsibility.”
It was noted that the cakes being sold in the market, lack essential details like manufacturing dates, locations, and license numbers, thus, raising health concerns. Moreover, vendors use inferior ingredients to maximise their own profits.
