Visakhapatnam: When compared to previous year, conviction rate for various crimes increased by over 5 per cent in Vizag city in 2024.
As many as 154 persons were convicted for various crimes under Visakhapatnam police commissionerate limits in 2024, while 146 persons were convicted for various crimes in 2023.
Of the total 154 convictions in 2024, 14 were sentenced to more than 20 years and 10 persons were sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison.
Though there is a rise in filing of FIRs, grave offences have gone down in Vizag city in 2024. Vizag city police filed as many as 9,142 FIRs in 2024 when compared to 7,979 FIRs in 2023.
Visakhapatnam police commissioner Shanka Brata Bagchi said murder case dropped to 22 in 2024 from 23 in 2023. Similarly kidnap cases also came down to 21 from 24. However, rape cases have gone up from 84 in 2023 to 121 in 2024, he said.
According to the police commissioner, top priority will be given for regulation of traffic in 2025, apart from special emphasis on prevention and detection in cyber crimes. He also said that the police department will make use of Artificial Intelligence in the coming days to control crimes and traffic regulations.
