Hyderabad: BRS MLA from Huzurabad, Padi Kaushik Reddy, on Friday approached the Telangana high court seeking to quash an FIR filed against him for allegedly threatening suicide during his election campaign.
The case is currently being heard by a special court for MLAs and MPs in Hyderabad, where Kaushik Reddy is required to appear regularly. In his petition, the MLA sought exemption from physical appearances until the high court decides his plea.
The FIR was registered based on a complaint from the Hanumakonda district’s Kamalapur nodal officer, who accused Kaushik Reddy of threatening suicide during a meeting on Nov 18, 2023, unless voters elected him as MLA. Police filed a chargesheet, and the case is being heard in the special court.
Kaushik Reddy denied the allegations, claiming the case was politically motivated. He argued that no video evidence was presented to support the claim, and that the electronic records (CD) containing the video were not accompanied by the necessary certificate as per section 65B(4) of the Evidence Act, rendering them inadmissible.
The MLA further noted that no independent witnesses or voters were examined to support the accusation. He contended that the case against him lacked merit and should be quashed. The matter is expected to be heard next week.
