Tata Becomes India’s 2nd Largest Carmaker; Beats Hyundai

Tata Motors has secured the position of the second-largest car manufacturer in India, following a strong sales performance in December 2024. The indigenous automaker recorded a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 1.7 percent, selling 44,221 passenger vehicles compared to 43,471 units in the same month of the previous year. The carmaker now holds a market share of 13.8 percent, driven by the success of models like the Punch and Nexon.

Hyundai Motor India, meanwhile, slipped to third place with sales of 42,208 units in December, reflecting a YoY decline of 1.3 percent. Despite this, the South Korean automaker achieved its highest-ever yearly domestic sales, recording 6,05,433 units in calendar year 2024. The Creta remained Hyundai’s top-selling model, followed by the Venue, Exter, and Grand i10. Notably, both Tata Motors and Hyundai experienced month-on-month (MoM) sales declines of 6 percent and 12.5 percent, respectively, in December. The sales gap between the two brands in December was just 2,013 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra continued its strong performance, achieving sales of 41,424 units in December 2024. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), Kia, MG, and Honda secured the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth spots, respectively, in the list of India’s top original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) for the month. Volkswagen and Skoda surpassed the 4,000-unit sales mark, while Renault and Nissan reported sales of over 2,000 units each. Citroën and Jeep recorded triple-digit sales figures for December.

Tata and Hyundai’s Upcoming Models

Looking ahead, Tata Motors and Hyundai are set to start 2025 with exciting launches. Tata will introduce the Harrier EVwhile Hyundai will debut the Creta EV. Both electric SUVs will make their official debut at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show this month in New Delhi.

The Hyundai Creta EV‘s prices are set to be announced on January 17th, while the Tata Harrier EV will go on sale in March 2025. Detailed specifications and features of both electric SUVs will be unveiled at the Auto Expo.
