Vijayawada: Home minister Vangalapudi Anitha on Sunday inspected Visakhapatnam central jail to assess its current condition. During her visit, she interacted with jail officials and addressed recent allegations and operational lapses within the facility.
The minister expressed concern over reports of ganja being smuggled into the jail and assured that a comprehensive investigation is underway. She attributed the jail’s deteriorating condition to lapses during the previous govt’s tenure and emphasised the need for corrective measures to ensure the safety and security of inmates.
Recent discoveries of cell phones inside the jail have raised serious concerns. The minister stated that the circumstances surrounding these incidents were thoroughly examined and assured that strict action will be taken against those found guilty. Investigations are also focused on identifying individuals involved in conversations conducted through the confiscated cell phones. Additionally, the presence of ganja plants inside the jail premises has further intensified scrutiny.
Disciplinary actions have already been initiated, including the transfer of certain staff members, although no officials have been suspended so far. The minister reiterated that negligence will not be tolerated and highlighted the importance of adhering to service guidelines, which prohibit uniformed personnel from participating in protests or strikes. A new superintendent has been appointed to spearhead reforms and ensure proper functioning of the jail.
To bolster security, CCTV cameras are being installed across the jail premises, with the process expected to be completed within ten days. The minister emphasised the critical role of technology in monitoring and preventing illegal activities, stating that no one can escape accountability in the tech-driven system.
As part of the reform measures, some inmates have been transferred from Visakhapatnam central jail to Rajahmundry jail to enhance security. The minister also assured that staffing levels in the jail would be increased to improve operational efficiency. A report on the cell phone issue is expected within 10–15 days, after which stringent actions will be taken based on its findings, she said.
Highlighting lack of oversight in the past, the minister noted that there were no records of visits to the jail by officials in the last five years. She reiterated her commitment to transform the jail system, ensuring transparency, and strengthening security through technological advancements and regular monitoring.
