More textile, garment industries to come up in AP | Vijayawada News

Vijayawada: The govt has decided to encourage the setting up of textile and garment industries to boost the state’s economy. It is hopeful that the initiative will attract investments to the tune of Rs 10,000 crore into the textile sector, which can take advantage of the availability of raw material in plenty.
The previous YSRCP govt had designed a five-year textile policy, but failed to release operational guidelines which resulted in chaos in the sector. Taking the previous experiences into consideration, The N Chandrababu Naidu-led NDA govt has not only designed a new textile policy but also released guidelines to bring it into operation.
“AP is the sixth largest cotton producing state in India, with a production of 15.41 lakh bales in 2022-23, offering substantial opportunities for value addition within the state. As per latest estimates, around 106 spinning mills with approximately 3 lakh spindles and 12,635 power loom units are in operation in the state. We want to tap more investment into the sector to create employment opportunities,” said textiles and handlooms minister S Savitha.
She said AP has readily available workforce as several educational institutions, including polytechnics and engineering colleges, are offering courses in textile technology. “The govt is planning to set up skilling centres in Vizag and Raydurg to meet industry needs. There has been limited progress in value-added textile activities such as weaving, knitting, preparatory, processing, technical textiles, and integrated units. These segments hold significant potential not only for value addition but also for generating large-scale employment. To ensure the conversion of the entire yarn produced in the state into fabric and prevent value migration, a focused approach is needed. We want to create large-scale employment, with the least amount of ecological and carbon footprint,” said Savitha.
The new policy framework would promote key components of the textile value chain, integrated textile units, and technical textiles. The govt has already established seven dedicated textile parks, while there are about five private textile parks. Brandix India Apparel City, with its integrated textile units across the value chain, is a major success story not just in AP, but across the textile sector in India. The govt is keen on further developing Venkatagiri textile park and Chirala handloom and textile park besides lending a helping hand to upcoming private industrial parks.
