Since the district administration is busy with works ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city on January 8, school managements and parents worry that traffic restrictions will hamper transportation of children to schools.
A few school managements claimed that they had been asked by the programme organisers to ready a certain number of buses for the event. If the vehicles are sent for the event, the schools will have to arrange for buses for students or declare a voluntary holiday.
A school principal said on condition of anonymity that the programme organisers on Monday (January 6) asked them to ready buses for the event but did not take the vehicles as of 9 p.m. “They [the programme organisers] may approach us on January 7 to take the buses … Schools have no information about the holiday on the PM’s programme day (January 8),” the principal added.
Speaking to The Hindu, Visakhapatnam Regional Deputy Transport Commissioner Adinarayana, however, said: “We have arranged vehicles for the convoy of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister, but, so far, we have not taken any school buses.”
Meanwhile, an official from the collectorate said internal discussions had been held to declare a holiday (at least a half-day) for schools in the vicinity of the Prime Minister’s convoy and the progamme venue – AU Engineering College grounds. A communication may be sent to the schools concerned on January 7, the official said.
