Vijayawada: Former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy received relief from the high court on Tuesday, which directed passport authorities to issue him a fresh passport with a validity of five years.
The court also issued him a no objection certificate (NOC) to enable him to attend his daughter’s graduation ceremony in the United Kingdom on Jan 16.
The high court overruled Vijayawada special court’s earlier directive dismissing Jagan’s petition seeking NOC for issuance of passport. In his order, Justice K Srinivasa Reddy clarified that Jagan must appear before the special court, pay a self-guarantee of Rs 20,000, and comply with other legal formalities to proceed with the issuance of his passport. The HC also referenced its earlier exemption granted to Jagan in Nov 2023, where it allowed his legal counsel to appear on his behalf in a defamation case filed by minister P Narayana. The court reiterated that the exemption remains applicable and there are no legal barriers in issuing a new passport.
