HMPV VIRUS NEWS LIVE UPDATES: India, on Monday confirmed the first five cases of the highly infectious and transmissible Human Metapneumovirus also known as the HMPV virus. Addressing a press meet, Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that a total of 7 cases had been detected in India — two from each Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and one in Ahmedabad, Chennai, and Kolkata.
This comes at a time when China is facing the worst winter HMPV outbreak.
HMPV, a respiratory virus first identified by Dutch researchers in 2001, has recently seen a sharp rise in cases, sparking concerns about a potential pandemic similar to COVID-19. However, experts have emphasized that this is not a newly emerging virus but one that has existed in nature for over two decades.
“The HMPV causes lower and upper respiratory infections. It is not a new discovery and cases have been reported from various countries over the years. There is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV and prevention is the cornerstone of controlling its spread,” the Union Health Ministry said.
