Leaders and activists of the CPI and the CPI(M) staged a protest here on Tuesday against the proposed strategic sale of the RINL-Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Visakhapatnam on January 8 to participate in the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony of various Central government projects.
They raised slogans against the government demanding that the government save the steel plant from privatisation, allocate a special package and provide captive mines to the plant.
“We want Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make a public announcement to withdraw the government’s decisions to destabilise the steel plant. Also, the Prime Minister should announce a special package and captive mines for the steel plant during his visit to the city on January 8,” the leaders said.
The protest was held at the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Dwarakanagar Junction in the city.
The programme was presided over by Aja Sarma, General Secretary of Uttarandhra Development Forum.
