Hyderabad: Telangana Youth Congress members were engaged in a violent clash with BJP workers outside the saffron party’s office at Nampally on Tuesday. The Congress workers were protesting BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri’s remarks against Priyanka Gandhi during an election rally in his constituency in Delhi.
In response, BJP workers emerged from their office, some armed with sticks, leading to violent clashes. Despite efforts by a few police officers to intervene, they were quickly overwhelmed, and the violence escalated further. Additional police forces arrived on the scene to restore order.
Later in the day, at around 4 pm, the violence continued when BJP activists, reportedly seeking to reach Gandhi Bhavan, tore up the Congress banners. This resulted in another round of clashes, as the two offices are located just a short distance apart. Police intervened once again to prevent the situation from worsening, and order was restored, though tensions remained high.
During the scuffle, BJP state general secretary Kasam Venkateshwarlu sustained a minor head injury requiring medical treatment at a private hospital. BJP activists, Anand Goud and Nanda Gopal, were also injured and treated at Osmania and Care hospitals. BJP spokesperson NV Subhash hit out at the Congress for coming armed with stones and rods forcing BJP members to defend themselves.
Union minister of state for home Bandi Sanjay Kumar condemned the attacks on BJP workers and accused Congress of inciting violence. He warned, “The BJP will not remain passive if its workers are attacked. If our workers choose to act, even the very foundations of Congress offices, such as Gandhi Bhavan, will be at risk.”
Deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka criticised Bidhuri’s comments, calling them an attack on Indian culture. He described the remarks as “shameful.” TPCC chief B Mahesh Kumar Goud condemned the violence and said BJP leader’s comments were disgraceful. Senior observers said Tuesday’s incident has further polarised the political landscape in the state, with both sides gearing up for what may be a protracted battle.
