On Tuesday, OnePlus introduced its latest flagship smartphones, the OnePlus 13 and the OnePlus 13R, which also became the first set of smartphones in the country to support the Jio 5.5G –– Jio’s upgraded Component Carrier Aggregation (3CC) 5G –– network, offering download speeds beyond 1Gbps.
“The OnePlus 13 series are the first devices to feature 5.5G in India, thanks to our partnership with Jio. Cutting-edge 5.5G technology allows your OnePlus 13 series device to connect to three different network cells, possibly even on different towers at the same time, for faster connectivity and better overall performance. Now you’ll stay updated with a cricket score even faster,” said James Paterson, senior global PR manager at OnePlus, during its winter launch event.
During a live demonstration, OnePlus showcased that the OnePlus 13 on a regular 5G network based on non-3CC technology delivers 277.78 Mbps of download speed, while the same device on the Jio 5.5G (3CC-compliant) network can achieve up to 1,014.86 Mbps of peak download speed. This technology offers up to 380 per cent faster download speeds, and this depends on the cellular signal strength. When a phone is latched onto a 5.5G network, it will display a “5GA” icon at the top of the screen, indicating access to the fastest available network type.
To access the Jio 5.5G network, there are no settings that one needs to enable, and one just needs a 5G smartphone compatible with the 3CC.
5.5G, also known as 5G Advanced, is considered the next-generation mobile wireless network solution that delivers improved download/upload speeds with lower latency, enhanced reliability, improved connectivity, and coverage. Theoretically, a 5.5G network can achieve download speeds ranging from 10 Gbps to 20 Gbps. However, this technology operates exclusively on standalone (SA) 5G networks.
