Amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Visakhapatnam to lay foundation stone for ₹2 lakh crore worth development works, the city has witnessed a series of protests here on Wednesday.

Activists from the CPI(M) and the CPI took part in agitations at various places demanding that Mr. Narendra Modi announce that the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) will not be privatised.

Earlier in the morning, members from the CPI(M) and the CPI staged a protest at Maddilapalem Junction, briefly disrupting the traffic. Several women activists staged protests wearing black bands against the Prime Minister’s visit. Alleging that the BJP is deliberately not allocating captive mines to the VSP and pushing the plant into a crisis situation, the activists staged a sit-in. Women police personnel had to rush to the spot and shifted them in the buses which were placed at Maddilapalem to transport the public attending the meeting. The members continued to protest in the bus. Later, they were detained.

Leaders from various parties who have threatened to disrupt Mr. Modi’s roadshow as well as public meeting were placed under house detention right from Tuesday evening itself.
