Hyderabad: Two weeks after a kirana trader was murdered in SR Nagar, Panjagutta police on Friday arrested the accused.
Karanam Ramesh, 32, was held in connection with the murder of Vishnu Roopani. The murder came to light on Dec 29 last after his family lodged a missing complaint, and his decomposed body was later found in Ramesh’s rented room at SR Nagar.
Ramesh mortgaged his car with Roopani for Rs 20,000 and lost the amount in online gambling. He urged Roopani to return the car without repaying the amount. As Roopani refused to return his car, Ramesh called him to his room under the pretext of consuming alcohol and killed him, said S Mohan Kumar, ACP, Panjagutta.
Ramesh, hailing from West Godavari district in AP, worked in a real estate office in a building at Yellareddyguda, where Roopani ran the kirana store. Ramesh was allegedly involved in a murder case in his native place and a woman molestation case.
Police said while taking shelter at his aunt’s place, he stole gold and cash from her home, which was stored for her daughter’s marriage, and purchased a car using the money. While working in the real estate office, he got acquainted with Roopani, and they started consuming alcohol together frequently.
As he was addicted to online gambling and lost a huge amount, he borrowed money from Roopani. On the day of the murder, he called Roopani to his room to have alcohol. After consuming alcohol, an argument broke out between them about the amount and the car, during which Ramesh allegedly strangled Roopani, stole his gold chain, cash, and mobile phone, and fled from the spot.
Based on clues and technical leads, he was arrested and sent to remand, added the police official.
