Priority for agri, drinking water in rabi distribution plan: Uttam

Hyderabad: Irrigation minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy has directed officials to ensure the equitable distribution of water to farmers under the Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP) for the rabi (yasangi) season.
Officials informed the minister that an ‘on’ and ‘off’ water regulation system would be implemented to ensure the efficient utilisation of water. Above lower middle drains (LMDs), water will be supplied on a seven-day on and seven-day off schedule for zone I, and an eight-day on and seven-day off schedule for zone II. This system, which began on Dec 25, 2024, will continue until April 8, officials said.
“The govt has prioritised agriculture, drinking water, and industrial needs in the allocation plan, while also accounting for evaporation losses,” he added. For areas below LMD, water distribution started on Jan 9 for zone I and on Jan 1 for zone II, with supplies to end on March 31 for both zones. These schedules are designed to balance the irrigation needs with the available water.
