Hyderabad
Out of 500 cities across 62 countries, Hyderabad is ranked 18th in terms of average travel time and 11th in Asia, according to a global travel index that used Floating Car Data (FCD) for 2024.
Kolkata, Bengaluru and Pune lead the charts for India with this dubious distinction among Asian countries and are 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively globally. Surprisingly, Kolkata has the slowest speed on roads with 34.33 minutes required to cover a distance of 10 km. It takes 34.10 minutes in Bengaluru and 33.22 minutes in Pune to cover 10 km. The index used average travel time to cover 10 km.
The average travel time in Hyderabad to cover 10 km is now 31.31 minutes or under 20 km per hour. The TomTom Traffic Index calculated that 85 hours are lost per year due to these traffic conditions in Hyderabad.
Data spread over one week shows that the travel time in Hyderabad drops down to under 16 km per hour between 5 and 6 p.m. During morning rush hour, the travel time is 17.8 kmph, and during evening rush hour, this drops to 15.6 kmph.
The fastest travel time is between 1 a.m. and 7 a.m. before morning commute time congestion kicks in. Even then, the fastest travel time remains under 40 km per hour despite long stretches of flyovers that girdle the city like a cobweb.
The area with highest congestion remains Ameerpet, Khairatabad, Erragadda, Balanagar, Somajiguda, and Begumpet. Comparatively, the western and eastern parts of the city remain relatively free of congestion.
On Saturday afternoon, while jokes were being cracked about empty streets in Hyderabad due to families leaving for their home towns, the traffic map was blinking red and yellow showing congestion across the city. Mehdipatnam, Nallakunta, Puranapul, OGH, Banjara Hills, Koti, MGBS, and Adarsh Nagar showed congestion while the central part of Hyderabad in Nampally was relatively free of traffic congestion.
The data for charting this congestion comes from 600 million connected devices, including smartphones using the application and in-car navigation systems.
