Survivors recount horrors of deadly manja | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: Ahead of Sankranti, the illegal sale of Chinese manja continues unabated in the city. Two survivors who were injured by these glass-coated kite strings recall their harrowing ordeal.
‘Trauma lingers’
In 2022, 21-year-old Ayaan Sayani narrowly survived a life-threatening accident with banned Chinese manja.
While riding his bike, his throat was slashed by the kite string, causing critical injuries. Rushed to Apollo Hospitals, doctors repaired severed blood vessels, a damaged thyroid, and a partially cut windpipe. Ayaan endured two surgeries.
“It was a race against time. Each year, news of deaths caused by Chinese manja brings back the haunting memory that I could have been one of them. Though I’ve fully recovered now, the trauma lingers.” said Ayaan.
‘Scarred for life’
Six-year-old Divya Madhavi from Yapral suffered gruesome injuries when Chinese manja cut across her face and ear while playing near home last year. “Her scars are a daily reminder of that horrific day,” said her mother. “Divya was so full of life. This incident left her deeply traumatised.”
