Firm joins hands with HMDAto rejuvenate Kokapet lake

Hyderabad: Gemini Edible & Fats India Limited (GEF India) has partnered with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), the Telangana Social Impact Group (T-SIG), and other govt bodies to rejuvenate Kotha Cheruvu, a water body in Kokapet.
This initiative, undertaken as part of GEF India’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, aims to restore the lake’s ecological balance and benefit the surrounding community. The Rs 1.20 crore restoration project was launched by HMDA commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmad. He said the lake had suffered significantly due to urbanisation and pollution, with sewage inflow and overgrowth of aquatic weed degrading the lake’s water quality.
“The project will focus on cleaning the lake, enhancing water quality, and preserving biodiversity using sustainable and cost-effective technologies. Additionally, community awareness programs will promote sustainable water resource management and ecological conservation,” he said.
He also emphasised the importance of local community involvement in maintaining the lake post-restoration to ensure its preservation for future generations.
Akshay Chowdhry, GEF India’s vice president said, “Through the adoption of Kotha Cheruvu, we aim to restore a critical water body and promote sustainable growth. This partnership reflects our commitment to creating a healthier and more sustainable ecosystem for the community,” he said.
