Checked out the Thar Roxx & did a short test drive: 7 pros & 5 cons

Steering is precise and light, by far the best from Mahindra.

BHPian Kashi053 recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

Wanted to check Battleship grey & Tango Red color which was available at Anant cars, Bannerghatta road.

The Tango red is different than Thar 3D Red. The Roxx Red has more shine and Red exterior with Mocha brown interior might suit well.

Checked out the Thar Roxx & did a short test drive: 7 pros & 5 cons

The Side profile. Red with black top is looking good.

The rear profile.

I think Mahindra is providing HT tyre in RWD and AT in 4*4. Red Roxx was RWD with HT tyre. Tyre profile 255/65R18

Seems like intentional gap to push for accessories to cover these. MudGuard is must to avoid splash on side panel which covers these gap properly.

Rear

Front

The 4*4 Battleship Grey varient

Same Tyre profile 255/65R18 in AT

Rear profile

Both together

I think Red with Mocha brown interior will look good on Roxx. If you want something unique, Battleship Grey is the one to go for.

Short test drive feedback

Pros

  • Refinement , NVH level – The outside noise is masked well, Diesel engine is smooth.
  • AT gearbox’s tuning. Shifts are smooth and predictable.
  • No transmission tunnel with almost flat floor at rear.
  • Steering is precise and light, by far the best from Mahindra. [Hate the Xuv300 Steering feedback]
  • Rear boot is shaped well and can hold a lot if you pack properly.
  • Mocha Brown interior option in 4*4, I personally love this color.
  • Handling is good for a BoF standard. Ride is manageable >30KM speed.

Cons

  • Seats – I simply don’t understand why Mahindra can provide the similar Xuv700 shaped seats. They lack side bolstering, under thigh support and overall comfort. The Xuv300 front seats are far better.
  • Ride never settles upto 30KM and gets better once you speed up.
  • The car is heavy and 172BHP/370NM do not translate the performance I was hoping for. Mahindra could’ve given the Xuv700’s 182BHP/450NM state of tune.
  • 9-speaker Harman Kardon system is just average.
  • If you are not after BoF 4*4, there are many compromises like no bottle holder, seating comfort, ride quality, less economy. Take a longer & multiple TD.

In summary, I came back with confused state. Maybe I had a huge expectation and somehow Roxx couldn’t meet all of them. But my requirements are clear and I need BoF 4*4 which can take me to places like Bumla, gurudongmar lake, Mana pass, Spiti in winter, Jaiselmer dune bashing etc. Need a longer TD to evaluate whether ‘The SUV’ is the one to go for.
