Cops reach out to tribals & ex-Maoists to counter Reds

Hyderabad: In an attempt to gain the cooperation of Gutti Koya tribals in Bhadradri Kothagudem district to contain Maoist activities, the police are now reaching out to them. Recently, cops held a medical camp and also provided them blankets to beat the cold.
On Jan 4, cops met residents of Pittathogu village where as many as 300 adivasis from 65 families received medical care in the health camp. Volleyball kits and notebooks were distributed to children and police also promised to provide solar lighting in the hamlets. The Gutti Koya tribals, who originally hail from neighbouring Chhattisgarh, have settled in villages such as Thillapuram, Mallapuram and Pittathogu under Edulla Bayyaram police station in the district.
As they live deep in forests and there is no approach road to these villages, district SP Rohit Raj took a two-wheeler for some distance and crossed a stream to reach the families in Pittathogu village.
To assure the tribal families that the govt was concerned about them, police said that apart from medical services, they would also be given all the benefits of various govt schemes.
The cops pointed out to the villagers that it was because of Maoist activities that they were not able to get the benefits of development activities. The police also urged the families not to allow Maoists into their villages and inform cops about their movements.
Elsewhere in Rajanna Sircilla district, the police on Tuesday visited families of Maoists and informed them about the benefits for surrendered naxalites.
SP Akhil Mahajan informed Nerella Jyothi, a surrendered Maoist, about the rehabilitation that would be provided for her. In Thangalapalli village, he met the family of Kadari Sathyanarayana and urged them to make an appeal to him to join the mainstream. This was part of the ‘Poru Kanna Oooru Minna – ana Ooruki Thirigirandi’ (Village More Important Than Your Fight – Come Back To The Village) initiative aimed at urging the Maoists to return to their village.
