Hyderabad: As the city celebrated Sankranti with fervour, the festivities took a toll on birds across the city with many reports of injuries. While the forest department has yet to compile official data, several animal welfare organisations reported a surge in rescue calls throughout the day.
“We rescued 22 birds and one kitten. The birds included black kites, green bee-eaters, pigeons, and even a rare Honey Buzzard. It’s disheartening to see such injuries, especially since Chinese manja is officially banned,” said Pradeep Nair from the Animal Warrior Conservation Society.
Citizens for Animals, another welfare organisation, reported saving four injured birds. Meanwhile, a group of three friends near Parade Ground managed to rescue over 12 birds during the festivities.
“Most of these birds suffered severe injuries caused by Chinese manja. You can tell by the depth of the cuts. A few birds were even found tangled in the manja. Sadly, we are sure there were many more injured that we couldn’t reach,” said Satish Machala, a college student from Secunderabad.
