Ignore fake Sankranti offer calls, messages: Police

Hyderabad: In a bid to cheat people, cyber criminals are sending fake WhatsApp messages or SMS on mobile phones offering free mobile recharge and Sankranti shopping offers with attractive gifts.

The city cyber crime unit (CCU) has urged citizens not to fall prey to these cyber fraudsters posting such fake messages which may result in financial loss. “Do not get lured to these fake messages sent by cyber criminals on your Whatsapp numbers or normal SMS. You could lose your valuable money from your bank account,” a senior CCU officer said. Fraudsters will ask you to click on the links in the name of fake commerce websites, which may be of Central or state governments, please do
not entertain them, the officer said.

The Telangana police are creating awareness on social media urging victims to file a complaint at 1930 in case they receive such false messages. “We have come to know that cyber criminals have formed WhatsApp groups especially to target victim on Sankranti through WhatsApp, e-mails and normal SMS offering discounts on purchase of new clothes and vehicles etc.

Citizens are urged not to respond to these fake messages”, the officer added. “Our teams are tracking them but citizens should also be alert as these crooks might hack victim’s phones and gain access to their digital banking, photos, videos and personal information”, he added.
