Mahindra & Mahindra has heavily focused on electric vehicles (EVs) with its upcoming first born-electric SUVs – BE 6 and XEV 9e. Both models will be open for delivery next month. These electric SUVs will soon be followed by the XUV 3XO EV and XEV 7e. Furthermore, the indigenous automaker aims to capture the growing hybrid market with its first petrol-hybrid model in 2026. The OEM has committed an investment of Rs 27,000 crore for the same project.

According to a fresh media report, the Mahindra XUV 3XO subcompact SUV will be the first model to feature the brand’s strong hybrid powertrain. Codenamed S226, this hybrid SUV is likely to witness a market release in 2026. The report further states that the Mahindra XUV 3XO strong hybrid version will feature a 1.2L, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with the hybrid setup. The exterior design and interior of the Mahindra hybrid SUV are expected to remain same as its regular ICE version.

Exploring Range Extender Hybrids

The indigenous automaker is also exploring range extender hybrids for its INGLO platform based SUVs, codenamed M130 and M330. For those unfamiliar with the fact, the range extender hybrid (REH) or range extended electric vehicle (REEV) is the hybrid vehicle featuring the combination of a conventional EV with a small ICE (internal combustion engine) or generator to extend the driving range.

Advantages & Limitations of REH

The range extender hybrid vehicles reduce range anxiety and dependence on charging infrastructure, while improving efficiency. However, these vehicles are less fuel efficient than the conventional hybrid models and require regular powertrain maintenance.

Potential Range Extender Hybrid Models

Mahindra might consider the upcoming BE 6 and XEV 9e born electric SUVs for introducing its range extender hybrid technology. Though, it will depend entirely on the market response. The final decision is likely to be taken after 6 to 8 months after their market arrival.
