Male SHGs Helping many AP Men Become Self-employed

Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh government has launched the AP Male Self-Help Groups (SHGs) aimed at enhancing the economic status of men throughout the state. The programme facilitates access to bank loans, so that groups of men can find self-employment opportunities.

The male SHGs, which have commenced operations in Anakapalli, draw inspiration from the successful Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) groups.

According to Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) project director N. Sarojini, there are currently 18 established SHGs, with an equal number yet to be formed. Among the established groups, seven belong to waste-lifting workers, nine are of construction workers and two comprise domestic workers.

The primary goals of men’s self-help groups are to increase employment opportunities for men across diverse sectors, provide essential training that enhances professional skills, and facilitate access to bank loans at reduced interest rates.

Eligibility for participation spans across many professions, including construction labour, sanitation personnel, gig workers, individuals with disabilities, rickshaw and cart drivers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters and other technical professionals.

Men aged between 18–60 years can approach their constituency’s municipal office or urban community development (UCD) office. They need to submit their white ration card and Aadhaar card for verification. Each group can consist of five to 10 members, with MEPMA overseeing the reorganisation of groups.

In terms of financial support, each group receives an initial loan of ₹10,000. Timely repayment will make the group qualify for additional loan amounts. Andhra Pradesh NTR Vaidya Seva and Aarogyasri programmes support such self-help groups.

Potential benefits of this initiative are low interest rates on loans, improved financial stability and expanded self-employment opportunities, which will contribute positively to reducing unemployment rates in the state.

Zonal commissioner B. Ramana said, “Interested individuals are advised to contact their local municipal office or MEPMA officials for detailed information regarding the scheme. They can upgrade their existing jobs once they are included in Self-Help Groups. The AP Male Self-Help Groups’ initiative marks a significant step toward men’s financial self-reliance in Andhra Pradesh. It offers a viable pathway for economic development through low-interest loans and self-employment opportunities.”
