Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to tap the growing electric vehicle (EV) market with 6 new models, slated to arrive by 2031. The Indo-Japanese automaker will begin with the Maruti and Vitarascheduled for launch in March 2025. This will be followed by compact SUVs, MPVs and a hatchback.
According to a fresh media report, a new Maruti electric hatchback (codenamed Y2V) is currently under development and enter into production by 2028. It will be an entry-level EV, designed and developed locally, targeting the budget-conscious segment of the market.
Competition & Platform
The new Maruti electric hatchback will be positioned against the Tata Tiago and Citroen eC3 and MG Coment EV. The report further states that this small EV might be based on the Suzuki eWX concept, which broke cover at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show. In fact, the carmaker has patented the eWX design in India last year.

Suzuki eWX Concept Design Highlights
Measuring around 3.4 metres in length, the Suzuki eWX carries boxy and tallboy design somewhat similar to the WagonR. While the concept lacks headlamps and B-pillars, it features a curved windshielf extending beyond the A-pillars. It has fully covered wheel caps and body cladding all around. The carmaker has yet to reveal the specifications of the eWX concept, but it has confirmed a driving range of around 230km.
Battery & Affordability
The upcoming Maruti electric hatchback, the model will likely to feature a 35kWh battery pack. It would be quite early to comment on its range and performance figures. It is expect it cater the urban buyers seeking a small EV for daily commutes and budget conscious customers.
Price Expectations
As a locally developed EV, it is likely to fall within the affordable price range. Its arch rival, the Tata Tiago EV is currently available within the price range of Rs 7.99 lakh – Rs 11.14 lakh (all, ex-showroom).
