Mayor G. Hari Venkata Kumari, accompanied by District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad and GVMC Commissioner P. Sampath Kumar, launched ‘Swachh Andhra – Swachh Diwas’ programme at Sivaji Park in MVP Colony here on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Hari Venkata Kumari said that as part of the programme, to be organised every third Saturday of the month, cleanliness activities were being organised at all the parks in 98 Wards in the city. Seeking support from the public to make the programme a success, the Mayor also urged them to avoid single-use plastic. She also suggested the citizens to go for terrace gardening and take up sapling plantation programmes at their workplaces.
Cleanliness competitions
Mr. Harendhira Prasad said that they will organise the programme with a theme every month. This January’s theme is ‘Nuthana Samvatsaram, Subharambham’ and cleanliness programmes are being organised, jungle clearance works, cleanliness activities at public places and public toilets will be taken up, and awareness programmes will be conducted on source segregation. He said that competitions will be organised in all the 98 wards on cleanliness. The best ward will receive an additional ₹5 lakh worth development works, he said.
Mr. Sampath Kumar reminded the citizens about the ongoing ban on single-use plastic in the city. Later, a sapling plantation programme was organised. A selfie-point was inaugurated by the authorities.
Meanwhile, VMRDA Chairperson Pranav Gopal and Commissioner K.S. Viswanadhan took part in a cleanliness programme at VMRDA Central Park as part of the programme. They also highlighted the importance of cleanliness and urged the staff to ensure the VMRDA properties and parks are maintained clean and neat.
Officials, employees and staff working at various government offices activily took part in cleanliness programmes at their office premises and surrounding areas, as part of the programme. The staff also took pledge on maintaining cleanliness.
