Delivery and bike taxi workers in the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate will now be subjected to mandatory alcohol tests before and after their shifts. This measure, introduced by the Cyberabad Traffic Police, aims to curb traffic violations and ensure road safety. Workers found violating the rules will face strict penalties, including reduced assignments, decreased incentives, and, in cases of repeated infractions, possible termination. Conversely, riders with clean records will be rewarded with increased incentives and recognition, encouraging safe driving habits.
The new measures were announced during a coordination meeting held on Monday, January 29 at the Cyberabad Police Commissioner’s Office by the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis.
The meeting addressed the frequent traffic violations committed by delivery personnel. Representatives from online food delivery and bike taxi platforms, along with traffic police officials, participated in the discussion.
“Delivery workers have been found engaging in a range of traffic offences, including riding without helmets, rash driving, wrong-way driving, drunken driving, and unauthorised parking. These violations, often committed under the pressure of meeting tight delivery deadlines, have led to accidents, some of which were fatal,” said Mr. Davis.
To mitigate these risks, the officer called for regular road safety training sessions for delivery workers. He also assured that the Cyberabad Traffic Police would conduct Traffic Safety Training Workshops to enhance awareness and compliance among riders.
Delivery platforms are now required to actively monitor their riders for compliance with traffic laws. The mandatory alcohol tests will act as a key deterrent against drunk driving. Riders caught violating rules will face immediate penalties, including fewer work assignments and reduced earnings. Repeat offenders risk termination.
Additionally, platforms were encouraged to implement GPS-based speed monitoring and AI-enabled violation alerts to prevent unsafe practices. Citizens will also be able to report violations through dedicated apps, fostering greater accountability among delivery workers.
To resolve traffic violations promptly and promote accountability, delivery platforms and riders will collaborate with authorities. The initiative is designed to foster a culture of discipline and safety, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring safer roads for everyone.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of incentivising good behaviour, with top-performing riders receiving recognition and additional rewards. Attendees included Madhapur Traffic DCP Sai Manohar, Cyberabad Traffic Administrators B.N.S. Reddy and G. Guruvaiah, and representatives from various delivery and bike taxi platforms.
