Saif Ali Khan’s attacker had stolen a customer’s diamond ring while working at Worli pub | Mumbai News

Bangladeshi national Mohammed Shariful Islam alias Vijay Das (30), who has been arrested for attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan during a failed burglary attempt at the actor’s Bandra residence on Thursday, has a history of committing theft. While working at a pub in the Worli Koliwada area a few months ago he was caught stealing a guest’s diamond ring, sources have said.

Islam, who is originally from Rajabariya village in Jhalokati district of Bangladesh, after allegedly illegally coming to India had stayed and worked in the Worli area of Central mumbai during August-September, police have learnt.

While working as housekeeping staff at a pub in Worli Koliwada last year, he had stolen a diamond ring from a customer, according to sources.

The customer informed the management of the pub and expressed his displeasure. When they checked CCTV, it was established that the accused (Islam alias Vijay Das) had stolen the ring. Following this he was fired, the source added.

A staff member working at the pub requesting anonymity said that nobody knew that he was a Bangladeshi national. “We discovered his nationality only after watching the news. He was good at work, but sometimes he behaved weirdly. He would speak less and never talk about his family or native place,” the person said.

Festive offer

While checking how he got the job at the hotel, police learned that he was hired through a contractor. To check his past the police contacted his contractor along with five others. After the Worli koliwada theft, Islam moved to Thane and worked in another establishment as housekeeping staff, but had to leave that job too as his contractor’s service contract was terminated in December.
