Hong Kong man diagnosed with rare disorder after experiencing symptoms of grey nails and skin. Know all about this condition and the causes behind it.

An 84-year old man in Hong Kong was diagnosed with a mysterious condition called Argyria which left unusual symptoms of greying of nails and skin. The man in question had consulted a hospital in Hong Kong five years ago to receive treatment for benign prostrate tumour. Following this, the man appeared at the hospital for complication of urinary blood flow obstruction along with symptoms of grey skin, eyes and nails. The doctors were left confuse after looking at his symptoms but upon conducting several blood tests, they found out that it was caused due to excessive silver in the man’s body.
What Is Argyria?
According to medical experts, the man was suffering from a rare condition called argyria, a condition that causes the systematic build-up of silver in the body’s tissues. In rare but severe cases, the high build-up of silver in the body can lead to the symptoms of gray nails and blue-ish skin.
Are There Any Long-term Consequences Of Silver Build-Up?
Experts say that this condition is harmless and will not cause any ling term damage to the patient’s health. Silver build-up in the human body is typically not harmful unless the amount is too high. High silver build-up could cause reduction in the absorption of certain antibiotics or other medications in the body.
Doctors state that there is no medication to reverse the greying of nails and skin however; they are still investigating how the patient suffered such high amount of silver build-up in his body. His medical history indicates that he had no contact or exposure to the metal recently or over the years.
