Hyderabad: The GHMC carried out an encroachment-removal drive at LB Nagar on Tuesday, clearing sheds and shops that were occupying footpaths and parts of the main road near the LB Nagar underpass.
Authorities removed sheds, shade awnings and temporary structures of restaurants, juice centres and paan shops, and also removed a type puncture shop running on the road.
The drive sparked outrage from local residents and shopkeepers. The locals pointed out that while shops were dismantled, the Pushpak Bus Stop shed located nearby was left untouched.
Shivaji, a mobile repair shop owner, said “They are having a biased treatment towards the public. They spared that Pushpak bus stop room, but they ruthlessly demolished a man’s entire livelihood. How can they do that?”
A heated exchange ensued between residents and GHMC officials at the site, but the police defused the situation and authorities continued with their demolition activities.
A GHMC official, speaking to Deccan Chroniclesaid “We are removing all encroachments from roads and footpaths to ensure smoother traffic flow. We will continue doing similar operations in the area to make sure the public property is maintained properly.”
