Student union elections were banned in Osmania University in 1988. “The government should revoke this decision to cultivate and preserve the democratic values in higher education system,” said former office-bearers of the Osmania University on Tuesday.

The two other measures to help achieve academic excellence would be through sufficient department-wise recruitment and investment, and by regularly improving the university’s infrastructure, they said. “By doing these, we can bring back the glory of Osmania University. We are the torchbearers of the university and we will strive for this,” the members said. The former elected office-bearers from batches 1977-1988 formed a consortium, of about 230 people, and met recently to discuss measures to make OU great again.

On Tuesday, leaders of the group met Vice-Chancellor Kumar Molugaram, felicitating him on his recent appointment, and handed over a representation the consortium deliberated and documented. Apart from the three top measures are promotion and branding of university’s achievements, research, success stories through social media; collaborating with premier institutions, extra-academic activities; faculty development and financial assistance.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, the delegation said Tuesday’s event was the first one to disclose its objective with respect to university’s development. “We will be engaging with all stakeholders on a regular basis on how to improve the university and the sole objective of this consortium is to revive OU’s past glory,” E. Vayunandan, a leader of the SU 1981-82, said.

The former college and university leaders are now in various disciplines of work including politics, law, education, civil society, business, and others.
