As the SUV market continues its upward trajectory, hatchbacks remain a vital segment of the Indian passenger vehicle market. Despite the rising popularity of SUVs, Maruti Suzuki has managed to dominate the hatchback category with seven of its models featuring prominently on the sales chart.

Hatchback Segment Overview – December 2024

Hatchback sales in December 2024 reached 65,770 units, registering a 12.07% YoY growth from 58,685 units in December 2023. However, MoM sales witnessed a significant 19.35% decline, with 15,781 fewer units sold compared to 81,551 units in November 2024.

Maruti Suzuki’s Commanding Presence – Maruti Suzuki solidified its dominance with four hatchbacks occupying the top four spots in December 2024.

– WagonR emerged as the segment leader with 17,303 units, showcasing a remarkable 101.71% YoY growth from 8,578 units sold in December 2023. MoM sales also surged by 23.75%, compared to 13,982 units sold in November 2024. WagonR now commands a significant 26.31% market share in the hatchback segment.

– Swift secured the second position with 10,421 units sold in December, while Baleno followed at 9,112 units. Both models recorded a decline in YoY and MoM sales, impacting their market share.

– Alto, on the other hand, demonstrated stellar performance with 7,410 units, marking a 196.76% YoY increase from 2,497 units in December 2023. MoM sales dipped slightly by 0.76%, maintaining Alto’s upward trajectory.

Tata and Hyundai in the Mix

– Tata’s Tiago, including its electric variant, secured 5,006 units, reflecting a 3.17% YoY growth from 4,852 units in December 2023. However, MoM sales saw a 5.88% decline, with 5,219 units sold in November 2024.

– Hyundai’s i10 NIOS (4,489 units) and i20 (3,453 units) both experienced YoY and MoM declines. i20 sales dropped 24.51% YoY and 12.03% MoM, highlighting challenges in the premium hatchback space.

– Toyota Glanza (3,487 units) and Tata Altroz (1,866 units) also recorded declines in both YoY and MoM sales, with Altroz suffering a significant drop.

Exceptional Growth for Ignis and Celerio

Two standout performers in Maruti Suzuki’s lineup were the Ignis and Celerio:

– Ignis sales soared by 91.07% YoY to 749 units, up from 392 units in December 2023. However, MoM sales plummeted by 66%, as there were 2,203 units sold in November 2024.

– Celerio achieved a phenomenal 202.83% YoY growth with 748 units sold compared to 247 units in December 2023. MoM sales fell sharply by 68.56%, with 2,379 units sold in November 2024.

Lower Down the Sales Chart

– MG Comet (700 units), Renault Kwid (628 units), and Citroën’s C3 (300 units) and eC3 EV (90 units) contributed modestly to the segment.

– S-Presso recorded just 8 units, marking an 86.67% YoY decline and a 99.65% MoM decline, down from 2,283 units in November 2024. This resulted in a market share drop to just 0.01%.
