Estimates for Operation and Maintenance of Irrigation Canals and Drains

Vijayawada: Krishna district collector D.K. Balaji has instructed officials from the water resources department to prepare cost estimates for the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of irrigation canals and drains in the district. The initiative is aimed at enhancing the irrigation system’s efficiency to benefit farmers. The collector set a deadline of February 3 for submitting proposals, with O&M work scheduled to commence in April.

During a meeting held at the collectorate in Machilipatnam on Wednesday, Balaji emphasised the district administration’s plan to release irrigation water to canals starting in June for the upcoming Kharif season. He directed the water resources department to prepare detailed estimates and implement O&M work promptly to ensure smooth water release.

The collector also highlighted an innovative approach to weed management. He suggested that weeds removed during canal maintenance be collected in one location to create compost. Farmers can then utilize this compost in their fields, reducing fertilizer costs and promoting sustainable farming practices. He encouraged collaboration between officials and farmers, envisioning Krishna district as a model for the state in this regard.
