KAMAREDDY: Kamareddy district is abuzz with excitement as FMCG giant Unilever has responded positively to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s proposal to establish an oil palm refinery in the district. During the Davos meeting, Unilever agreed to set up the refinery in Telangana, specifically targeting Kamareddy.
Centrally located in north Telangana, Kamareddy is well-connected by the Secunderabad-Mumbai train route and National Highway 44. Despite its strategic location, the district remains industrially underdeveloped. The proposed oil palm refinery is seen as a major step towards economic growth in the region.
Currently, oil palm is cultivated on 316 acres in the district, far below the target of 1,760 acres set by officials. Efforts by private firms and the government to encourage large-scale oil palm cultivation have yet to yield significant results due to lack of infrastructure and interest among farmers.
Farmer Ramachandram from Bhiknoor mandal expressed optimism, saying that oil palm cultivation offers 30 years of yields and that the establishment of a refinery would significantly increase the sown area. He believes Unilever’s presence would transform Kamareddy’s economic landscape.
