Protect woman harvesting cotton crop on disputed land: HC to cops

Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Tuesday directed police to provide protection to a woman to harvest her cotton crop cultivated on 7.5 acres of a disputed land parcel in Madgul village in Rangareddy district.
Justice B Vijaysen Reddy issued the directions in a petition by farmer S Sunitha who had alleged that police failed to respond to her complaints about threats to her family and problems in harvesting due to a dispute with her relatives over 17.5 acres in Madgul village.
“We have granted relief as she is a woman. We do not want her to face more troubles,” Justice Reddy said.
Earlier, Sunitha alleged that there was no response from cops when she called the police helpline 100 and even the Madgul station house officer did not respond when she called his official number to complain. She also alleged that she had even personally gone to the police station to lodge a complaint and seek protection to ensure harvesting of her crop.
The HC had earlier directed the tahsildar to inquire into the matter and the official’s report validated the woman’s claim of cotton crop. Based on the report, the judge on Tuesday directed Madgul cops to give protection to Sunitha and her family to harvest their crop in 7.5 acres without any disturbance, but refused to interfere in the balance area of the disputed land.
The matter was posted to Feb 18.
