The two indigenous automakers – Tata and Mahindra – are dominating the Indian EV (electric vehicle) market with their expensive product range. At the recently concluded Bharat Mobility Show, Tata showcased the Harrier EV in its near-production version, while Mahindra displayed its new born-electric BE 6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs. While the Tata Harrier EV is set to go on sale in March, Mahindra’s next major product launch will be the XEV 7e (electric XUV700). The launch timeline of the Mahindra XEV 7e is yet to be revealed. However, it’s expected to debut towards the end of 2025. Here’s a brief overview on the upcoming Tata and Mahindra electric SUVs.
Tata Harrier EV
The Harrier EV underpins the Acti.ev platform, which is essentially a heavily modified version of its ICE architecture (Omega) – called Gen2. The SUV’s electric iteration shares a strong resemblance with its ICE counterpart; however, a few design changes differentiate both models. The electric Tata Harrier features a differently designed grille, revised front and rear bumpers, new dual-tone aero-optimized alloy wheels and EV badging on the front doors and tailgate. The cabin layout also mirrors the ICE-powered Harrier.
When it comes to features, the Tata Harrier EV comes with the vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities, connected car tech, OTA (over-the-air) updates, new terrain modes, cloud connected telematics, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a touch-based panel for the HVAC controls and more.
While exact specifications of the Harrier EV are yet to be revealed, Tata Motors has confirmed that the electric SUV will deliver a maximum torque of 500km. It’s expected to feature a 75kWh battery pack and dual electric motor, delivering a range of over 500km on a full charge. A leaked design patent confirms the presence of the AWD (all-wheel drive) system. There will be multiple terrain modes including Sand, Snow, Gravel and more.
Mahindra XEV 7e
The production-ready Mahindra XEV 7e (Mahindra XUV700 electric) was revealed through leaked design images. The electric SUV will sport the XEV 9e-inspired blacked out grille, inverted L-shaped connected LED DRLs and split headlamps. It will ride on the newly-designed aero-optimized alloy wheels. Similar to its ICE-powered version, the XEV 7e will feature flush door handles, contrast ORVMs, LED light bars and skid plates.
Inside, the electric XUV700 SUV will have dual-tone Black and White theme with the two-spoke steering featuring an illuminated logo as we have seen in its ICE counterpart. A three screen setup will be borrowed from the Mahindra XEV 9e. This unit will function as an instrument cluster, an infotainment unit and a display for the front passenger. Features such as Harman Kardon 16-speaker audio system, VisionX HUD, powered front seat with a memory function, Level 2 ADAS might also be on offer.
The XEV 7e might source its powertrain from the Mahindra XEV 9e. The latter comes with the 59kWh and 79kWH battery packs, delivering a claimed MIDC range of 542km and 656km, respectively. This electric SUV might also get the AWD (all-wheel drive) system.
