On Tuesday Barça completed a marvellous 5-4 win over Benfica in the Champions League in their penultimate fixture of the league phase. The win both sees the blaugranes directly through to the last 16 of the competition and extends their lead as top goalscorers in all competitions in the continent’s top five leagues.
With a total of 94 goals in 31 matches, Hansi Flick’s team lead the table of clubs from Europe’s major leagues. Chelsea are in second place on 83 goals, Bayern Munich in third with 81, followed by Liverpool and Real Madrid who have both scored 79 each.
Second best Barça total in 21st century
With 94 goals up until now, this season marks the second best total after 31 games in the 21st century. Only the all-conquering Barça side of 2011/12 have scored more after the same number of games with 100 goals. With an average of over three goals per game, Hansi Flick’s team are right up there with the best Barça teams of the last 25 years in terms of finding the net.
January blessed with goals
January has been a demanding month for Barça with six games so far, and the home game on Sunday against Valencia in La Liga is still to come, along with the final game of the Champions League initial phase against Atalanta on Wednesday 29 January. Nevertheless, Barça have maintained their excellent attacking stats, scoring five goals in no fewer than three of those six games – the 5-2 win in the Spanish Super Cup final, the 5-1 win over Betis in the Copa del Rey and most recently, the 5-4 win away at Benfica in the Champions League.
Domination in front of goal in all competitions
Barça top the overall charts in Europe in terms of goalscoring, but also they are top scorers in La Liga with 52. They lead the Champions League ranking with 26 goals in just seven matches and no-one has scored more than their nine goals so far in the Copa del Rey.
