Hyderabad: BRS MLC K Kavitha demanded the immediate increase of reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) to 42 per cent as promised by the Congress ahead of last Assembly elections and implementation of its Kamareddy Declaration.
She criticised the party for failing to implement none of its poll promises including increased reservations for BCs, financial assistance to handicraft and manual workers and others.
In a strongly worded open letter to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Thursday, Kavitha charged the Congress government of neglecting its poll promises outlined in the Kamareddy Declaration.
She found fault with the government for allocating a meagre amount in the 2024-25 Budget for the BC welfare against the promised Rs 20,000 crore per annum.
“The promise of Rs 20,000 crore annually for BC welfare remains a sham, with no concrete steps taken,” she said, adding that the BCs had no confidence in the Congress which subjected them to severe injustice.
The senior BRS leader also lambasted the government for failing to increase the BC quota in local bodies within six months, as per the Declaration.
“A year has passed, and there is no clarity on the BC quota. The Congress seems to be hiding behind the excuse of an unscientific caste census and a dedicated commission as part of its delay tactics,” she said.
She demanded the immediate release of caste census details and asked the State government to spell out next steps after the dedicated commission submits its report.
“Why does the Congress look down upon BCs? Why were promises not implemented even after 12 months after claiming to implement within six months? How long will it take?” she questioned.
Pointing out that the tenure of gram panchayats lapsed about an year ago, Kavitha charged the Congress with undermining democracy in villages by delaying elections for gram panchayats and zilla parishads. “Special officers’ rule has replaced democracy in villages, exposing the government’s apathy towards BCs. But the government has no sense, it seems, to swiftly increase reservations and hold elections,” she added.
The BRS MLC reiterated her demand for swift action to increase BC reservations to 42 per cent, warning that Telangana will not tolerate further delays.
She also reiterated her demand for the installation of a statue of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule on the Assembly premises, a long-standing request ignored by the government.
“The BRS will not rest until every promise of the Kamareddy Declaration is implemented,” she declared.
