Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna, directed by Laxman Utekar dropped its trailer on Wednesday. The trailer of the film presents Vicky as the fearless Maratha warrior, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who took the throne after the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha empire. The trailer has him waging war against the Mughals, ruled by Aurangzeb, who were trying to take control of the Deccan region after the death of Shivaji. Chhaava means a lion cub.
Directed by Laxman Utekar, who has previously made films like Mimi, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke and Luka Chuppi, the film presents itself as a period piece where Aurangzeb pledges to kill Sambhaji under any circumstances as the war between the Marathas and the Mughals intensifies. The film is largely an actioner, with Vicky trying to play the leader who kept the Maratha empire together at a time when those around them were trying to encroach their lands and demolish their empire.

In the film, Vicky Kaushal plays the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Rashmika plays his wife, Maharani Yesubai. Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was the second Maratha emperor, and the oldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It appears that the film focuses on the Mughals trying to take over the Maratha region after the death of Shivaji. The Mughal empire was then being ruled by Aurangzeb.
It is famously known that Sambhaji allowed Aurangzeb’s son to live under his protection and saved him from the wrath of the Mughal emperor. Sambhaji protected the Maratha territory from the Mughals and his war tactics were sharp enough to beat the Mughals on many occasions. He led the Maratha army in the Battle of Wai against the Mughals and won.
Chhavaa releases in theatres on February 14.
