Hyderabad: Following a preliminary report from a doctors’ committee investigating the kidney racket at a private hospital in the city, the Telangana govt is considering handing the case over to the Criminal Investigation Department. Sources said the govt may also reach out to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, as the committee found links to both states, where illegal kidney transplantation activities are ongoing.
The committee’s two-page report was discussed by higher authorities, and further action is anticipated as more details need to be uncovered. The report, based on conversations with patients and recipients, highlights the need for a police investigation. CID may be involved depending on new information, particularly concerning the networks in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, sources said.
Dr Nagendra, committee chief, stressed the need for a thorough investigation, asserting that the racket targeted economically disadvantaged individuals.
The private hospital, which had only nine beds and three doctors, allegedly lacked the necessary infrastructure for kidney transplants, suggesting possible support from nephrologists and urologists. Sources also said the hospital’s alleged circumvention of regulations by conducting live transplants. Police are investigating the potential involvement of a Bengaluru-based doctor.
