Grama Sabha meetings tense in Warangal, Karimnagar


Drama and poignant scenes unfolded at many Gram Sabhas in Warangal and Karimnagar districts as officials red out the lists of beneficiaries on Thursday.

Controversy erupted during Grama Sabhas in Nallaballi mandal when the name of former BRS MLA Peddi Sudharshan Reddy was found in the list of ration cards. Authorities suspected that the application was submitted online, but Sudharashan Reddy himself denied submitting it. Officials, however, assured people that the application would be rejected.

At a Grama Sabha in Buttaigudem village of Kannaigudem mandal of Mulugu district, a farmer identified as Kummari Nageshwara Rao tried to end his life when his name was not found in the list of Indiramma Housing scheme. Reacting immediately, the officials shifted him to the government hospital.

Drama unfolded at a Grama Sabha in Darga Thanda of Mahabubabad district when a young woman expressed her frustration with the behaviour of officials. During the meeting, she dared the officials by slapping her thigh as a way of showing her anger.

Grama Sabhas saw widespread protests in Karimnagar district as many names were missing from the list, especially from the Indiramma housing and ration cards lists.

In Ganneruvaram mandal, people were distressed after their names were missing from the Indiramma housing list. A woman who attended the meeting along with her husband broke down and confronted the officials, pleading for inclusion of her name in the list. “We don’t have land, no property and not even a ration card. We’ve applied everywhere, but our names are still not in the list,” she lamented.

In Kandlapally Naikapugudem of Beerpur mandal, there are 60 poor families living in huts. Officials had assured them they would be getting Indiramma houses but their names were missing in the lists.

In Kodimyala of Jagtial district, people protested when their names were not found in the beneficiaries lists.
