Vijayawada: The suburbs of Vijayawada are rapidly turning into unofficial dumping grounds due to the alleged negligence of the city’s civic body and local panchayat officials. Garbage piles and construction debris litter the main roads, causing severe inconvenience to residents and students in the area.
While the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) implemented measures like door-to-door garbage collection and penalties for street littering, the panchayats in suburban areas remain neglected. Unable to dump construction waste within city limits, builders started targeting suburban panchayat roads for illegal dumping.
The road connecting Prasadampadu to Kanuru has become a major dumping yard, with garbage from local panchayats and construction waste from Vijayawada city being dumped there. The situation is particularly dire near Kanuru govt school, where students face health hazards following the burning of waste.
“Our school road is filled with garbage. Panchayat officials themselves dump waste here. The stench and flies make it unbearable. Burning garbage worsens the situation, creating smoke and health issues,” said B Ravi, a student from the school.
