The 76th Republic Day on Sunday, marking the adoption of India’s constitution and the country becoming a republic in 1950, was celebrated with patriotic fervour and energy with bright display of the national flag and related events.

Schoolchildren donning their favourite national leaders’ costume, flag-hoisting events in street corners and residential colonies, and widespread buntings of the national flag were sighted across the city.

Several heads of educational institutes, government departments, banks, and civil society organisations participated in the flag-hoisting ceremonies and commemorated the heroes behind the Constitution.

According to chairman of Telangana Council of Higher Education V. Balakista Reddy, the State was on the path to become a leader in the field of education in the country with initiatives such as Skill University, Sports University and other transformative steps. The government’s measures are aimed at prioritising the aspirations of the youth and creating opportunities in the employment sector, he said.

COVA Network, a national network of voluntary organisations working for communal harmony and community empowerment in India and peace, as part of the celebrations, as part of the celebrations, staged a play titled ‘praja nahin nagrik hai hum’ (we are not people but citizens) on citizen rights to participate in local governance. The group held a talk on the role of citizens in strengthening democracy and protecting the sanctity of the Constitution and released a handbook on enabling realisation of rights and entitlements.

While activities in the forenoon were filled with patriotic fervour and remembering the constitutional principles, the relaxed afternoon and the evening showed waves of tricolour ribbons, buntings and flag decorations at entertainment venues, restaurants and malls that offered special discounts to patrons.
