Telangana Prisons and Correctional Services department is set to host the 6th All India Prisons Duty Meet 2025, Director General Soumya Mishra announced during the celebrations on Sunday (January 26) morning.
The event will be organised in collaboration with the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D), New Delhi and will bring together personnel from Prisons and Correctional Services Departments of all States and Union Territories. “This marks a proud moment for the Telangana government and our department as it is the second time we have been entrusted with the responsibility of organising this significant event,” she said.
The official also spoke about other initiatives taken up by the department including the ‘Empowering Prisoners through Upcycling’ project in Central Prisons in Hyderabad, Cherlapally, Sangareddy and Nizamabad as well as Special Prisons for Women in Hyderabad under which 250 inmates will be trained in crafting eco-friendly products like dairies, furniture, decorative boxes and lamp shades from waste. The pilot project to recycle temple-used flowers into eco-friendly incense sticks at District Jail, Karimnagar was received well with significant demand for these products at My Nation stalls in Numaish and in the city, she said.
In addition, the 20 metric tons of old newspapers available at all prisons across Telangana will be transformed to decorative and useful items, promoting sustainability. “By rolling, folding or weaving the paper, you can create beautiful baskets, photo frames, and interior designs for wall art, lampshades. This process not only reduces waste but also encourages eco-friendly practices while adding a personal touch to home decoration,” the official added.
The department is also set to train 355 warders from New Delhi’s Tihar Jail in the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA), Hyderabad.
