Vijayawada: Underscoring the state’s commitment to become a renewable energy hub and contributing significantly to India’s national energy transition goals, AP Genco managing director KVN Chakradhar Babu has said that govt has already secured investments of ₹3.92 lakh crore. He said that it would pave way for 3.30 lakh employment opportunities since the launch of Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy (AP ICE) – 2024.
Chakradhar Babu explained that state govt is at the forefront of a green energy revolution, making rapid strides in renewable energy development through this ICE policy-2024 that aims to attract investments worth 10 lakh crore in the clean energy sector, creating an estimated 7.5 lakh jobs, both directly and indirectly.
Speaking to media on Monday, the AP Genco managing director shared AP’s achievements in the power sector under the visionary leadership of chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and the guidance of energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar and chief secretary K Vijayanand.
He highlighted the robust nature of the state’s electricity system and its pivotal role in empowering farmers. Moreover, he called for a united effort to ensure uninterrupted 24×7 power supply for residential, industrial, and commercial consumers.
“The power sector continues to prioritise daytime free power supply to over 21 lakh agricultural consumers, showcasing govt’s dedication to inclusive growth,” Chakradhar Babu said.
The Genco MD asserted that AP is leading the way in renewable energy initiatives, particularly in solar and wind energy. Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme, steps are being taken to solarise upto 1,200 agricultural feeders, adding a capacity of 3,725 MW.
“Govt has also launched the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Muft Bijili Yojana, aiming to install rooftop solar panels for 10 lakh beneficiaries, with committees at state and district levels ensuring effective implementation. All govt buildings in the state will be solarised through collaborations with renewable energy service company (RESCO) models, NEDCAP, and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited by Dec, 2026”, he said.
The Upper Sileru PSP, with a capacity of 1,350 MW, is scheduled for completion by Feb, 2029. Two 115 MW hydropower units at Lower Sileru are set for completion this year, and 12 units of 80 MW each at the Polavaram project are expected to be operational by Jan, 2027. AP Genco has also received preliminary approval, in partnership with NHPC, to develop new pumped storage projects (PSPs) with a combined capacity of 5,070 MW.
The Genco MD said that AP Transco network operates with low transmission losses of 2.69% and high system availability of 99.82%. The AP grid recorded a peak demand of 13,712 MW on May 4, 2024, alongside an average daily supply of 222.35 MU during the financial year 2024-25. Key projects, such as the 400/220 kV gas-insulated substation at Thallayapalem, were successfully completed, reinforcing the grid’s reliability.
Meanwhile, the energy department conferred lifetime achievement award upon APERC in-charge chairman Rama Singh Thakur, in recognition of his exemplary contributions. The chief secretary and special chief secretary for energy K Vijayanand felicitated Rama Singh Thakur for his relentless efforts.
