Vijayawada: Responding to the appeals of local residents, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) and the revenue department officially renamed Pakistan colony to Bhagiratha colony. The decision came following persistent requests from residents who expressed anguish over the negative connotations associated with the old name.
Around 65 families currently reside in the area, which was previously notified as Pakistan colony in official records, including Aadhar and voter cards. However, locals shared their distress over frequent mockery and being unfairly labelled as anti-nationals, particularly during incidents of conflict involving Pakistan.
“People blamed us when Pakistan attacked Indian soldiers. Our youth were deeply affected and felt ashamed to disclose our colony’s name. We decided to rename it Bhagiratha colony and passed a resolution,” said Kagga Seethatamiah, president of the colony.
Following protests and a formal resolution by the residents, NTR district collector Dr G Lakshmisha confirmed on Tuesday that the renaming was approved.
