Court tells DGP to act on delayed police association polls

Hyderabad: The Telangana high court on Thursday directed the director general of police to take action on a representation to conduct elections for Telangana Police Officers Association. Justice B Vijaysen Reddy issued the interim orders while dealing with a contempt petition.
The judge directed the DGP to dispose of a representation submitted to him in May 2023, to comply with the high court orders issued in June 2016.
“Dispose of the representation within a period of five weeks from the date of receipt of a copy of the order (issued on Jan 30), by giving an opportunity to the petitioner and all other interested persons,” said the court.
The high court, in June 2016, had directed the DGP to consider a representation made by the petitioners for holding the elections to the association, in accordance with the law, as early as possible, preferably within a period of four weeks from the date of the order.
However, even after seven years, as the orders were not complied with, the petitioners gave a representation for the same. Even after that, when there was no action on the representation, they filed a contempt case. The court adjourned the matter to April 1 for further hearing.
