Vijayawada: A grand farewell (Vidai) parade was held at the 6th Battalion Parade Grounds in Mangalagiri, to honour the outgoing DGP Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao on Friday morning. Senior police officials and personnel participated in the event, recognising his contributions to the state police force.
Later in the day, senior IPS officer Harish Kumar Gupta officially assumed charge as the new director general of police (DGP) at the AP police headquarters in Mangalagiri, Guntur.
Addressing the media, Gupta announced several key initiatives aimed at strengthening law enforcement in the state. He revealed that around 200 cyber commandos are being trained with the assistance of IIT-Chennai and IIT-Kharagpur to combat cybercrime. These commandos will serve as master trainers for future batches, ensuring a well-equipped cyber task force. He emphasised that AP police will take a strong and heavy-handed approach against organised crimes, including cybercrime, objectionable social media posts, and land grabbing.
Reiterating AP police’s commitment to bolstering cybercrime enforcement, DGP Gupta stated that each district in the state will soon have a dedicated cybercrime police station. This apart, he has plans to introduce a separate IT cadre in the police department to enhance digital policing.
DGP Gupta stressed the role of AI tools in crime detection, prevention, and reduction. He announced that facial recognition systems will be integrated with CCTV networks, and forensic labs will be upgraded with advanced technological capabilities.
